As soon as the sun rises over the sea, Usedom reveals its rich holiday potential. The first people to be seen are joggers and Nordic Walkers, enjoying the tranquility of the long beach and the freshness of the morning air long before the “competition” arrive on scene: to bathe in sun and sea, to fly a kite or to play beach volleyball. Others come out just for a relaxing stroll. If the wind is blowing and the waves are raging, surfers, kite-surfers, and yachtsman practice their hobbies on the Baltic Sea and its backwater. Landlubbers can discover the secrets of the island’s interior: on foot, on horseback or by bike on the 150 km of cycle paths. However much sport you wish to participate in, you must leave time for a taster of the island’s cultural life. Usedom boasts a calendar of events from January to December that range from "A" for Ahlbeck’s summer festival to "Z" for Zinnowitz’s winter beach chair festival.
It may have been the beginning of the space industry, but it was also the first step towards developing weapons of mass destruction. The Peenemünde military research centre was one of the most modern technological facilities in the world in the years from 1936 to 1945. The first launch of a missile into space took place here in October 1942. In the nearby air force testing area, rocket engineers tested numerous flight objects equipped with revolutionary technology. Visit the place where the first rockets were tested.
Every Saturday from May onwards, the island of Usedom will be flown to directly and non-stop from Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Nuremberg und Stuttgart by Germany's second largest airline, Air Berlin. There are also scheduled flights from the Ostfriesische Lufttransport GmbH (OLT) to Usedom from Bremen, Cologne/Bonn, Frankfurt, Munich (August/September) and Zürich (June-September).
